Bushcraft Projects - How to Make a Feather Stick, Tarp Shelter and Snare

Bushcraft is an ancient art that allows people to survive in the wild. Many techniques can be dangerous if not performed properly. If you are new to the art, practice in a controlled environment first. A snare is an excellent tool to have in the forest. For making your own snare, you should also have some supplementary items. Some of these items will make your bushcraft projects much easier to complete. Read on to learn about some of them.

Making a feather stick

The making of a feather stick is a basic bushcraft technique that requires a few key materials. You should start by buying an upright piece of timber of a specific diameter. Once you have it, you'll need to sharpen it with a knife. For a typical bushcraft knife, the diameter should be at least two inches and a maximum of three. Good woods to use for feathersticks are pine, willow, cedar, and sweet chestnut.

Making a tarp shelter

If you are looking for a simple, inexpensive and effective shelter, then making a tarp shelter is a good option. You can buy tarps for bushcraft projects or make your own. There are many configurations and styles available. You may need a different number of poles and trees depending on your desired shelter's size and purpose. You can even make a door flap out of a tarp to allow ventilation or egress in case of bad weather.

Making a seat in the woods

The first step in making a seat in the woods is to prepare the wood for the seat. If the seat is natural, it is best to file the stumps clean and smooth. Then, make a frame from four pieces of lumber that fits the seat well. Drive staples along the top edge and every two inches on the outside. Use your palm to tighten the material as you work. When you're finished, the seat should be stable and comfortable.

Making a snare

To make a snare for bushcraft project, gather materials. First, a piece of wire is necessary. The wire is cut into loops and placed inside a cable ferrule. Try not to cut the wire inside the ferrule, as it could cut the animal when it crosses it. Then, bend one end of the wire and crimp the loop. Repeat with the other end of the wire.

Making a leather pouch

To make a pouch with a leather strap, you first need to cut a piece of leather that is 3" by 14" and long enough to tie around the pouch's bottom. Make a small loop out of the excess material and stitch it around the outer edge of the pouch. You can also use a piece of paracord that is static and does not stretch. You can use the inner strands as extra cordage. You should avoid using shiny or slippery material for the string.
