Basic Survival Skills Everyone Should Know

While the easy way we live today is a testament to modern convenience, it isn't always easy to survive. In fact, in some cases, we can order anything delivered right to our door, so you don't even need to leave your house. But modern conveniences can't take the place of basic survival skills. Not only can these skills mitigate the worst case scenario, but they may also save your life. So, what should you know in a survival situation?

Start a fire

While many people consider matches and lighters to be the basic method for starting a fire, there are actually several better options. While rubbing sticks together is a quick way to start a fire, it is inefficient when wood is wet. A good way to start a fire without matches is to use friction. If you don't have a match or lighter, you can try to use a magnifying glass to focus light into a concentrated beam, which will ignite tinder or clear ice.

Find a water source

Finding a water source is one of the most crucial wilderness survival skills to know. Water is extremely important to the human body and can be found in almost any environment. A good strategy when looking for water is to head downhill. If you cannot find running water, look for green vegetation that indicates that there is water nearby. If you cannot find green vegetation, look for flying birds or aquatic animals.

Find a shelter

One of the first basic survival skills that everyone should learn is how to build a shelter. Building a shelter can be easy if you know how to use tools and materials around you. You can start with simple tools and gradually increase your skills by building a simple shelter and moving on to more complicated ones. You can learn how to build a shelter using sticks and lashing them together. Besides rope, you should also learn how to make a snare, which you can use to catch your dinner.

Signal for help

When you're lost and need help, signaling for help is an essential survival skill you should know. A signal mirror, fire, or bright colored markers can attract attention, and whistles can summon rescuers. A signal mirror should be placed where you can see someone, so that people can find you easily. If you're stranded in the dark, you can also use an emergency strobe light to attract attention.

Protect yourself from predators

Predators lurk in many places, but most of them know their victims. They are not strangers, and 'Stranger Danger' is inadequate to protect you online. Most child abusers abuse kids they already know, and they can slip through the hiring process of any organization. Predators use social media to find out more about their victims. They may pose as children, or use a profile photo and other details that are not true. Once they have their victim's details, they may attempt to set up a face-to-face meeting with them.
